I'm sure a lot of us found very nice things for their collections in 2009.

I'm interested to see your favourite item of the year!

Here we go! It is easy to find things of the bigger German Wehrverbände from the Weimarer Republik (like SA, Stahlhelm etc.). But it is not easy to find things of the Wehrwolf, Roter Frontkämpfer Bund etc.....

Here is my favourite 2009!

A visor cap of the Roter Frontkämpfer Bund (paramilitary section of the German KPD) from the 30s!

Some nice stuff guys.

This is my favorite purchase of '09...and believe me, I had ALOT of acquisitions this year. The slower market fueled the purchases for me....like the old cliche says, "buy low..sell high"..though I seldome sell:D:D

Eickhorn Roon, single upright oakleaf on the obverse langet. Though this pattern is not all that sought after, it's a relatively scarce pattern to find in decent shape.

It is not important how many pieces you bought. Important is what you bought, Greg. I'm sure that EK found a good new home together with its other "EK relatives" in your collection! :)

Ok, not all prices....

That's the advantage to collecting items which the general collecting community neglect. It keeps pieces more affordable, and during a buyers market, provides extra leverage for the buyer to negotiate. It definitely worked to my advantage this year...though I must say, money for me too was tight.

My favourite piece from this year is really hard to pin down onto one item. But, here is the one that I want you to see.

It is a Pack Oval etch with the large Panzer on one side and a dedication to Hermann Weiser in gold lettering on the other.

You can see pictures of this etch in the book, German Clamshells and Other Bayonets by Gary Walker and Ron Weinand, on pages 62 & 63.

Weiser was an SS Obersturmfuhrer and commander of the second company of the first reconnaissance detachment of the Leibstandarte Division Adolf Hitler. He was also a Knight's Cross winner for his participation in the recapture of Charkov. All of this I am quoting from the book mentioned above.

Yes, I do love this bayonet and its etch and its history.

Its always hard to figure out whats the favorite. :001_rolleyes: Machetes do i not really collect , but this was a spesial one

Finally this Nm condition early type of an orginal Luftwaffe machete lands into my collection this year in february 09
Alcoso scales ACS trademark.
Grip hilt made of brass.
Blued scabbard. Dark & nice.

This pictured machete have also full 100% provience from Norway on the west coast where the Germans served during wartime in a Airport there they have base.
The pre owner of this machete was a Police shef in that town in the war. When he died about 15 years ago the family sell some of the stuff he taken from the Germans. Include a nice orginal SS helmet with history to the user and a few SD / SS things + NS Police tag and this machete.
The machete have in the past 10-12 years been into a collection in Norway.
I remember that day i see this machete first time many years ago. I was in the Gunshop where the dealer get this in. I hold it in hands and have "no clue" of its rarity at all.
The dealer sold it after only few days that time. The time has gone and ..... Now its in my collection. ( the world are small)

This types of machetes was carried aboard the He 111 Heinkel 111 Bombers serving on the Eastern Front. And may other planes?
The Machete was an organic component of a large survival kit carried aboard the aircraft.
Used by the Luftwaffe.
I bealive some of the German planes landing here on the westcoast , are sending troops to Murmansk for the Eastfront. Im quite sure this Machete was one of the items the Policeman get hands of when he served near the base ?

This is a rare puppy... you don't often come across era photos of Kriegsmarine personnel wearing the M1943 field cap. This is the cap that was photographed for the three volume book Die Kriegsmarine: Uniforms and Traditions by John R. Angolia and Adolf Schlicht, volume 1, page 312. At the time of photography the cap belonged to Bob Alexander. The book doesn't even have an era photo of one being worn, but I have seen a few.

Well, I've had an incredibly good year with adding significant pieces to my collection. I've gone down the list and there are 5 or 6 "highlights" out of everything I acquired, this being one of them...

A SS-Soldbuch (and Erkennungsmarke) to SS-Obersturmführer Erich Bruhns who was awarded his EKI while serving as a platoon leader in "Totenkopf."

He served first in 8.komp/ SS-VT regiment "Germania" during the 1940 campaign in the west, then SS-Division "Wiking" (still in Regiment "Germania") during the first 6 months of Barbarossa. He was then sent to SS-Schule Braunschweig and after being commissioned in June of 1942 (SS-Untersturmführer) sent back to Wiking as a platoon leader (11.kompanie) where he was wounded in November of the same year. He was then transferred to Totenkopf and served as a platoon leader in the 1./SS.Pz.Gren.Rgt.5 and was wounded in early August 1944. He was awarded the EKII, IAB in silver and black wound badge through Wiking and the EKI and silver wound badge through Totenkopf. He was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer in Nov.1944

John Moore set me up with a copy of Bruhns' 25+ page NARA SS file... Lots of great info contained in there!

The photo is just killer... It's razor sharp and you can even make out the SS runes on Bruhns' 4-year SS medal ribbon on his ribbon bar. Part of his IAB in silver is also visible.

Here's a quick shot... Sorry to watermark it but I will share better scans at a later date, once I have completely researched the book.

I had a great year, rebuilding my collection, with the help of many of you (for which I am forever grateful).

I had a couple of nice helmet additions, a Cavalry Haupmann's tunic in WONDERFUL condition (....and now I'm looking for a Cavalry visor in similar condition, to go with it) a deactivated MG34 that I REALLY love, but the two pieces that I keep holding in my hands and looking at, over and over, are this Zimmerman DKiS, and a 24mm Deschler Gold Party Badge. I received both in Dec. 2008, but finished paying for them in 2009, so I think of them as 2009 additions...:)

I am very fortunate to have them.

Cheers,

Probably my two favourite non-paperwork related items for 2009 are these two visors.
The Pioneer Officer's cap is named to a 'Zull' of Pi.Btl 3 and there is a Zull named in the Volksbund who is listed as MIA at Stalingrad which corresponds with where 3 Infantry Division were fighting but I have been unable to confirm if this is just a coincidence or is indeed the original owner of this visor.
And the Panzer Officer's cap is named to a K Tegtmeier.

And here is one that I'm paying off this month so I guess it qualifies for 2009: Kriegsmarine enlisted overseas cap with the pin of the U-391. Actually, my Kriegsmarine collection is really coming along... I even surprise myself at times. Gert Dültgen was the commanding officer of the U-391 and they really weren't a successful U-boat in combat before being lost in action.

Deumer Pilot badge (all Deumer parts).
Got in in early 2009. It represents for me (IMHO) the most desireable pilot badge. It is a used, been there badge, and not for the minty lovers. I have been after this very badge for a number of years and finally got it. A bit of a holy grail for me. Would not trade it for ANY other other pilot badge. I have not seen more than 5 all Deumer parts pilot badges during the last 7 years. They are VERY rare! (not to be confused with the Deumer marked Juncker parts pilot badge)
This one I would prefer over a minty piece. It is an early war badge, and could have been in the battle of Great Britain. (or elsewehere) Who knows?

My friend has this one from the Deutschland Regiment... an SS-Obersturmfuhrer of Engineers. It is the SS-VT style with an added dark-green wool collar piped in silver twist cord and has the pre-1940 insignia --- all hand-sewn. Inside the French cuffs you can see that the original color was a dark-gray and the tunic (came with a pair of short pants) is weathered.

He got this around 1978 if I remember correctly. I think the officer belt and buckle also came with this for about $1,100.
