Might be interesting - let's see the first edged weapon that started your blade collecting, or it may perhaps be the only edged weapon in your collection.

Here's mine - an Alcoso Army Officers dagger. The portepee and hangers were the next purchases.

Great idea for a thread!

This SA dagger was my first militaria item ever and could probably be credited with starting my interest in collecting. When I was 10 we moved to a new house that was bought as an estate, contents included. A couple of months after living there, I was downstairs and found this dagger hidden behind a 2x4 in the wall. I know when it was found it had a paper tag around the handle, but it spent 10+ years in my father's dresser drawer before they would let me have it.

I really did not start collecting until I was given a bunch of items from my grandfather including the US knife (pictures included) but it was the SA dagger that got me started.

Very nice SA dagger Jason, and a great item to get you started in collecting. I'd love to find something like that in an od house!

Hope to see some more 'first edged weapons' soon.

Although this was technically my first edged German piece, I consider it to be fundamentally the catalyst which flung me into collecting sabers.

Nothing special about her. A standar ACS Nr. 119. Her blade rates mint, her scabbard around 95%, dent free, and her hilt rates at about 80% gilting. Earlier heavy brass hilt assembly, 3 strand of double twisted grip wire, and maker marked.

It was the 1st saber I came accross. Although she sits in the back of the display cases, and her lack of prominance does not distract from the pieces importance to me. i'll post photos later. Am curious to see everyones elses stuff.

My first ever edged weapon was a plastic pirate sword from the military base exchange. I couldn't find an image on the net of one, as this was many many years ago. If one popped up on fleabay i'd buy it for memory sake.

It had a straight, plastic blade, white in color with a plastic round ball at the end of the blade to prevent eye pokings. The hilt was plastic, painted gold, with plastic jewels encrusting it. I absolutely loved these. Naturally, as a kid I would sharpen the ball off the tip so it would be sharp. My fascination must have started with my fathers naval officer dress sword.

So the collecting bug comes from a long time ago when you were a kid...Interesting!

Hi Guys
This was my first dagger and also my first item to get me collecting, after being given to me by my Great Uncle who was in the "War". Cannot tell you any more as he is no longer with us but it kick started my collecting of Nazi items especially helmets.
Has anybody any idea why the portapee would have been attached? As it has always been there.
Thanx
Robert

Hi Robert, the knot is actually a Police issue and should not be worn on an SS dagger at all. Just one of these things most likely added by the Vet when he picked the dagger up.

Nice dagger btw! This maker made nice quality items.

Cheers, Ade.

Cheers, Ade.

Here's my first: SA by G. L. Koller Nachf. bought from antique shop in Shreveport, La. for $450.00 about year & half ago. Sorry the picture's not very good. Shame that the blade has the crossgrain about polished away. I bought it anyway because the grip has horizonal tiger stripes across it and the scab. anonized finish is in such great condition and as I later learned, somewhat rare m.m.

Man, just previewed enlargement of photo and don't know what was up with the blade looking so bad in it. Motto and blade look fine in life, just not much x-grain.-

Can't remember what my first edged weapon was,but it probably was a cheap pocket knive. My first military type knive was one of these two, both acquired about 40 years ago. Both were found in old barns I was helping to tear apart. The first is a U.S. trench knive dated 1917.The second is a U.S.M.C. corpsman's knife.

My first blades were pocket knives. My grandfather gave me my first one
when I was seven years old. He always said that a man is never completely
dressed unless he has his pocket knife.

My first collectable knife was this Swiss( I believe) made Pioneer bayonet.
I was 13 when I found it (1969) in a surplus store. I bought it with money earned
mowing lawns. This was the one that got me hooked............

Hi Fellas,

I love threads like this, they bring me back to when Eban was plentiful with good pieces & bargains. I got this one from an old Eban seller although he hadn't listed it yet, an RZM SA. I got it because it had close to 100% paint & 100% crossgrain, not that I understood crossgrain at the time.

In all likelihood it's unissued as the only detraction is some degradation of the later production crossguards. I also didn't appreciate maker marks at the time although that's changed a lot in the years since. I don't generally like RZM pieces for the lack of interesting maker marks as well as poorer quality construction, but I can't bring myself to sell this one. It started an addiction & remains close to my heart.

Billy, I understand your special feelings for your "first" child.
Here is mine; purchased in 1965 for the grand sum of $25.00. A ground Röhm by Pack.

D,

Oh man, now we're talking, a ground Röhm by Pack? And it was your first? Something can be said for beginner's luck, that piece is a thing of beauty. I hope you still have it in your stable.

Billy,
It's still here. It will stay in the family long after I'm gone.
I picked up the Pack tag a few years later. It was in a cigar box of junk at a local flea market (along with a Luftwaffe Honor Roll Clasp). Trust me, the rest of it really was junk - broken ball point pens, paper clips, an LBJ button and a used band-aid.
The dagger itself, I bought from a dealer at a local gun show. I didn't realize he was hosing me at the time. They were selling for $15.00.

When I was a lot younger I had and used various pocket and camping knives (as tools) which have long since disappeared.

While I don't have an image stored of the very first edged weapon I ever acquired (as a collectible) because: " it spoke to me". Here is a very 'close cousin' which is at the bottom of the picture (I still have the first one, but no picture).

A Preußischer Kavalleriesäbel M 1811 (Blüchersäbel). With the smaller example on top being a Third Reich rework for the cavalry of the Preußischer Artilleriesäbel n/A M 1856.

A followup with a few additional images of the WW II period saber. The red arrow in the one image shows one of the original Imperial era markings with the Third Reich era one just below it. FP

Hello folks,
Here is my 1st dagger, it is the SS em dagger with vertical hanger. The dagger has an RZM marked blade (WKC). The dgger is a little beat up, but it cost me nothing, it was given to me by my great-uncle who captured it. The daggger was given to me when I was 8 years old. I think it is very cool.

By the way, the partial ground Roehm (Eickhorn) next to it I got when I was a kid as well for a few dollars.

Regards,
Jody
