Hi

How to create avatars successfully is a common question on forums and so I have searched out a free piece of software that I think does the job.

This will allow you to let your imagination run wild and allow you to create your own avatars for the forum in a matter of moments.

The software is called Avatar Sizer and can be downloaded at www.download.com

Here is the link, though after a period of time it may be a dead link. If so, just visit the website and search on 'Avatar Sizer'

http://www.download.com/Avatar-Sizer/3000-2192_4-10386938.html?tag=lst-1&cdlPid=10386939

Here is what the developers say:

"Avatar Sizer takes an image and makes it smaller, suitable for use as an Avatar. Avatar Sizer is exceptionally easy to use and can convert most of the popular image types into an Avatar.

Any image can be made into an Avatar in theory, provided you have the rights to use the image and the image you have is one of the ones Avatar Sizer can handle, you can turn it into an Avatar."

It has step-by-step instructions, but if any members have any difficulties, then add to the thread and I will create some screen dumps for you.

Nice software. Very easy to use - hence my new avatar. If I can figure it out, then anyone can. Cheers, Marc :)

Hi Ade

They are two very nice avatars and it is surprising how well these avatars are looking.

I have to make some permission rules on the size of them and I think that yours and Marc's are spot on size wise.

It is nice to give people choice to individualise themselves and I have found that avatars is a common 'how do I...?' thread that gets posted.

Everyone can do it now so it is pleasing that it is already being put to good use.

Does this software shrink with GIFs files without losing the animation?
If not, when i was looking how to do it, i found this website:
http://www.gifworks.com/image_editor.html

It succesfully resizes GIF files to meet the standards of the forum (Max allowed 80 x 80 pixels)
Just upload the image by clicking where it says "File" and then "Open Image". Select the file from your computer or an external place (such as a website). Then, when it uploads, go to "Edit" and chose "resize".
Works great. It wont lose too much quality!

Hi Mike. I think i know whats wrong with your avatars. I downloaded the ones you uploaded to the testing forum and saw that the size of them exceeds the allowed.
If you go to "Edit Avatar" there is a note..
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 80 by 80 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller).

You have to chose 80 x 80 pixels in order to make them work. You can chose that size in the gif resizing website.
If you are still having problems, send me the originals, i'll resize them and send them to you in the correct size to upload them. :thumbup1:
