This one arrived today. Issued un-named which is rather unusual considering most other South African Medals issued in WW2 were.

Hi Darrell, I wonder whether the colour on the ribbon has got something to do with the Dutch past of South Africa?

I have just looked in the medal year book concerning this one.
It states that the medals was issued in 1946 and the colours of the ribbon represent the South African National colours and were issued to Men and Women who served for at least two years in any official voluntary organisation in South Africa or overseas. It must have been voluntary and unpaid.

Yep, one of those medals that rarely gets any "press" compared to it's brothers and sisters.

I guess I was partly right. South Africa having been colonized by the Dutch, our flag (red white and blue) became their national colours. After all, descendants of the first Dutch settlets, the Boers, were in power for a very long time.
