It's amazing how time can get away from me. I've been working off and on at a research project since 1999.
What I've got is a common surname to a WWII HEER officer, the title Dr. (not medical doctor), and what from all appearances is his Feldpost number to staff I and 1-4 Co. IR 331 (1939-1940) or staff I and 1-4 Co. Inf. (later) Grenadier Reg. 339 (1940-1944).

One thing about the passage of time more rolls have surfaced. Is it possible to find an individual from a unit roll?

From NARA I got a list of seven officers. But without a first name or initial and no info. available on units from NARA my research stalled.

Deutsche Dienststelle Berlin got me the Feldpost information.

I feel the only hope now is the unit IR331 or IR/GR 339. Thoughts?

Joe:

First, have you checked the NARA records of the seven officers to see if they were assigned to IR331 or IR/GR 339? That would, in all probability, be easier that diving through divisional records for the 167.ID which maybe 1). handwritten and sometimes hard to read, 2) incomplete since many division records were damaged or destroyed when in a fire in late 1944. Even so, I have not seen the divisional records contain personnel lists except for casualties and promotions, but then my experience with them is limited. Unfortunately, regimental records are few and far between.

Marc, thank you for the reply. I have not ordered the Microfilm. Back then it was $34.00 and not knowing if it contained any usefull information I held off. Always had to watch how I spend my funds. :blushing: What info. does the microfilm contain?
There is also the possibility the number is not feldpost but service ID. Birthday is doubtfull as it would have him born in 1875. A 65 year old officer in 1940, not impossible I guess but of the seven listed the oldest was born 1888.

Sadly, NARA just increased the microfilm cost to $125 per roll/DVD. An the way the HEER files are catalogued will cause you further grief. While they are alphabetic, there is one main collection with four alphabetic addendums. So without a finding aid, you won't even be able to know upon which roll he will appear.

If you wish to contact me by pm in two weeks, I may be able to offer some further guidance.

Cheers,

Mike
