Established 17 October 1938.

Also known as the "Medal for Courage", "Medal for Valor" and "Medal for Gallantry".

Considered the most highly respected Soviet military medal, it was awarded to personnel of all ranks in the Army, Navy, Border Troops and Ministry of Internal Affairs troops for:

Personal bravery in a theater of operations.

In defense of USSR borders.

For performance of a soldier's duty in life-risking situations; and for activities against spies and subversive elements.

Soviet Citizens as well as foreigners were also eligible for this award.

In common with many other Soviet awards this medal could be confered more than once. It is made of silver. Approximately 4,600,000 were issued.

I am looking for a ribbon and suspension bar for this one.

Cheers, Ade.

This nice early one was awarded to Private Ionychev, who was awarded his Bravery Medal on 29 October 1942 for fighting on the approaches to Stalingrad as part of the Stalingrad Front.

Another nice one is this heavily worn Bravery Medal, #1290486. It was awarded on 20 May 1944 to Master Sergeant Plaksin, a mortar crew commander serving with the 4th Ukrainian Front. He got his medal for destroying an enemy firing position on the approaches to Sevastopol on 8 May 1944.
