I picked up a nice photo album recently. It belongs to an American sailor who was on an impressed German ship at the end of the war. The ship was used to ferry US troops home. While he was in France he visited battlefields, bought souveners, met some ladies and by the looks of it had a grand old time. I'll post a small portion of the pics. First an overview of a couple of pages.

And now some of the pics. These first ones are stock souvener photos with many being German themes. Note the labelling, not always correct. Pics 3 and 4 are flamethrower troops.

Photos of the dead are a mojor theme demonstrating the ferocity of the fighting and how inhuman the war had become. Note the bodies were the skull is showing but the rest of the flesh is still there. Quite a few accounts talk about the rats that would come out at night and eat the exposed flesh of the face, head and hands, leaving the rest behind.

I'm amazed at the details found on these pictures because they are so small.

And on a lighter side, the ladies that he met. The first one wrote him a letter but it is in French for the most part so....

great album! I have several of the same pics of the dead you posted, all very small pics. i think they were popular souvieners
