Here is an uncommon Zimmerman RK grouping with good provenance. The grouping is to Hauptman Jurgen von Nottbeck. Awarded for a counterattack across a frozen river in the Kurland Pocket. Nottbeck was wounded shortly after and sent back to the west for recovery. The grouping was obtained by his daughter. He kept the medals in the handkerchief shown.

promotion letter to major. It is actually dated after the war while he was in captivity.

Nice grouping.

When you look at his picture, with the glasses and all that he don't really look the hero type somehow does he he? You half expect him to be the regimental clerk or the likes?
Just goes to show how appearances are deceptive

That is one of the reasons I really like the grouping. The guy looks like a nerd, but was a company commander who had balls of steel. Sometimes looks can be decieving. I like the way also that most of the awards actually appear worn and were stored in a handkerchief!

Hi Tom

That is a wonderful group and many of the pieces have real character.

Do you have any more information about his career and award dates as I am very interested to learn a little more about von Nottbeck.

Thanks guys-

And nice cross, Kevin. The duaghter held on to these medals for several years after his death. Detlev had stated that this was the first zimmerman grouping that he had come across with solid provenance. It is interesting that it is 20 marked and that it has a conventional loop. Some RK collectors, incorrectly in my opinon, assume that a zimmerman must have an imperial style loop to be correct. Loops can be switched, but here is a couple photos of the cross next to photos of the cross in wear. Note the non-imperial loop.
