An unusual item this. If you know what the correct name or use is please add a post.

This is a very well made item. The handle and frame for the tape is made of thick brass and the tape measure seems to be made of steel and is 25 feet long and in inches. The weight on the end is very heavy being made on solid brass and also has measurments down the lengh.

This is clearly intended to measure the depth of something and as shown also has the Broad arrow mark. It is marked 'John Rabone & sons' and made in Birmingham England.

Something for use by the Royal Engineers maybe??

What do you think gents??

Variations of these are used today. Typically for measuring the depth of fluids in various tanks etc. Could be also to measure the depth of rivers or streams if military orientated?

Thank you for the post, I was hoping for the tunnelling or mining side of warfare in WW1 but never mind. Something different in my collection though and as it has the broad arrow so I will keep it.

Hi Steve

I cannot add much at all to the thread other than what has already been mentioned.

I can say that it is beautifully made and was certainly built to last.

Hello Raymond

I am beginning to wander if it is military or carries the Goverment mark (Arrow) for some other reason. I have seen other items carrying the Broad arrow that i'm sure weren't military including items that were clearly made for the GPO (General post office) many years ago.
