Hi Guys, another medal from my collection.
Established 17 October 1938. Awarded to all ranks in the Army, Navy, Border Troops and Ministry of Internal Affairs troops for:
Exceptional conduct in battle resulting in the successful execution of a battle task by the military division;
Personal courage shown in defense of USSR borders;
For excellence in military and political training;
Mastering new warfare techniques and technology.
Citizens of the USSR as well as foreigners were also eligible for this award. This award could be bestowed more than once.
Approx 3,300,000 were issued.
Made of solid silver. I love the black patina on my example.
Early issues, called Type 1's by collectors, were on a red ribbon with a screwback fitment. These come in 3 variations.
Later issues, on the familar 5 sided suspenion bar with grey/yellow ribbon, are called Type 2's, as shown here. These also come in 3 variants.
As usual they are serial numbered to the reverse. This enables the medal to be researched via the former Soviet archives. However, the cost of about $100 makes this a bit prohibitive. But once I am feeling "flush" I will have it done. Going by the number, mine “1625652” was issued in 1945.
Cheers, Ade.
