The Key – Bernie Brulé
The Key is certainly not a new publication, but well worthy of a mention, as it is an invaluable tool for anyone wishing to research SS Officers.
The book is essentially a table database of every SS number that appears in the following Dienstaltersliste’s.
• 1934: October
• 1935: July
• 1936: December
• 1937: December
• 1938: December
• 1942: January, April
• 1944: October, November
It gives researchers a reference tool that is very easy to use and means that there is no need to check in every index of the Officer lists to find a number reference anymore, which I assure you is very time consuming.
The Key is listed in SS number order and once you have identified the number you want, you can see the page reference that the chosen officer appears in each of the Dienstaltersliste mentioned above.
I have also found it useful when a member posts up an SS number as I can quickly tell if the man is an Officer or not. That saves a huge amount of time as the Dienstaltersliste’s are indexed in surname order.
It is not a complete list of all the SS Dienstaltersliste that were printed, but it does not detract as the lists not included are based on higher ranks and so not as all encompassing.
When I am conducting SS Officer research for anyone, The Key it is the first book I pick up. It has saved me so much time and I know I would be lost without my copy.
I would not even wish to guess how many man hours were put into this project, but it is clear that it was not something undertaken by the faint hearted as it required a huge amount of diligence to complete.
If you are looking for an easy-to-use reference guide, then this book is a must.
