Thats all for tonight. Sorry for the experimenting but kind of felt my way thru it. The ram patches are for the 21st OSS (operational support squadron.)

Chuck:

How do you tell if the patches are WWII era? I have several - especially the "ghost divisions" - but am unsure of their authenticity. Any advice you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Marc, most ghost divisions are repro's, but first the basics, cut edge patch, "snow" or a lot of white or sometimes green, black, brown, etc, on the back. The patch shouldn't feel stiff in your hands and also shouldn't glow under black light.

Another thing with ghost patches, a lot of the embroidered (WWII) era never made it onto a uniform or even over seas. Most that were worn were Brit made.

You can post them here if you like and we can taske a look. One thing I did notice was the fake embroidered have a very loose embroidery not a nice tight and well done job on them.

Chuck

Of course this is just my feel on them and others may look for other things but it's a start.

Chuck:

Here is my collection of ghost division patches. As I look at them, I suspect they are mostly like all fake. Note I have not blacklighted them. They are from top left to lower right:
14th Army
6th Abn Div
18th Abn Div
21st Abn Div
22nd Abn Div
46th Div
59th Div
108th Div
141st Div (This patch is very suspect; look at the poor stitching job)

Please tell me your opinion. It would be nice if you write why you think each is, or is not, fake, so we can use this as a learning tool.

Sorry Marc, I went away for a while and haven't gotten to the computer. I also suspect these as all fake as well. I have a couple of identical that you have that I know are fake. The top middle would be I suspect the only one with a chance, but without it in hand, I'd say no.

As reals ones are hard to find I put some into my collection as fillers. I haven't much time tonight but in the next couple of days I'll post some pathes good and bad so you can see what the backs of WWII patches should look like.

Marc, I'm going to post some examples of the good WWII patches and the post war remakes as well as a post war comparison. I'll start with two good, 14th Army and 30th corps, and two bad 22nd and 59th div. Then 2 more remakes, and then a comparison of a good 157th and a bad 157th.

Notice the snow on the backs of the good ones and lack on the bad. The top 157th is the WWII patch and the one below is the repop. I'm hpoing you can see the embroidery differences as well.

I'm going to post two 45th div, one OD border, Notice the amount of snow on the back of the standard patch. Both of these are period. And lastly a 44th div (period) and a Continental Air Command (post war).

I hope this helps a little. Chuck

Chuck:
Thanks. I am not sure I am seeing what you, the more experience collector, is seeing. Can you tell me what make the difference between the originals and the fakes?

Chuck Locke
1st August 2008, 00:36
Marc, look at the 2 157th patches. Note the quality of the embroidery on the front, especially in the tail and hind legs. Then on the back you'll notice a lot more white thread on the back of the top patch. This is called snow and most embroidered examples of WWII will have a good amount of it. Post war patches will have little or none. The continental air patch is a good example of this. It almost appears as clear as the front except in reverse.
