A surprising number of tanks have survived the World Wars. While most are in museums, a few are still in place on the battlefield.

The Surviving Panzers website documents surviving WWI and WWII tanks in a series of downloadable PDF files. http://the.shadock.free.fr/Surviving_Panzers.html

Eighty-nine Ferdinand/Elefant Panzerjäger were built. They were first employed at Kursk in 1943 with disastrous results. The surviving Ferdinands were withdrawn, modified to improve survivability, and renamed Elefants. The Elefants were then sent to Italy where they went into battle against US Forces.

Today, only two examples exist. One Ferdinand from the schwere-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 654 (captured at Kursk) is in the Kubinka Tank Museum near Moscow. One Elephant from schwere-Panzerjäger-Abteilung 653 (captured in Italy) is at the US Army Ordnance Museum at Aberdeen Proving Ground.

In March 2008, Aberdeen Proving Ground’s Elefant was put back on display after restoration. Here is a quick walk around taken in August 2008.

For a comparison of what the Elefant looked liked before its restoration:

Damage to the Elefant was painted with silver paint.
