In 1970 I finished my service in the US army & got a European discharge. I hired a Volkswagen from Herz & spent a couple of weeks driving around Germany.
When I first arrived in Germany, I was stationed at the old SS barracks in Nurnberg. From there I took many walks to the Reichsparteitag area around 15 minutes away. We also went on tours & I saw the following;-
* The Feldherrnhalle' in Munich.
* The Eagle's Nest & what was left of the Berghof.
* The House of German Art in Munich.
* The Burgerbraukeller in Munich-where it all started.
* The grassy mound in Berlin with the Fuhrerbunker undernearth.
* The Reichstag-Berlin.
* Spandau Prison in Berlin.
* The former German Air Ministry in Berlin.
Having done that much already. we visited the following during the two weeks;-
* The former SS Fuhrer-Schule Bad Tolz, at that time called Flint Kaserne & used by US special forces.
* Landsberg Prison-where Hitler was imprisoned & wrote 'Mein Kampf'.
* The German army infantry Museum at Hammelberg.
* Lastly I made the pilgrimage to the BeVo factory in Wuppertal. While there I took 4 photos. The factory was closed so I could not go in. As this was 1970, they probably still had the famous 'books' but I didn't have much money at the time so I could not have bought them.
In short I had a really good time in Germany.
Looking back I did not do the following;-
* The Luftwaffe Museum
* The naval museum.
* The Ordensburgs Sonthofen, Krossinsee or Vogelsang.
If anybody would like to see pictures of any of the above, let me know.

Very, very interesting and thanks for posting up the photographs of the BeVo factory.

Now that is some tour you undertook in the VW and it would be great to see more images of your trips to historical landmarks.

Thanks very much for posting the images up.

This is very interesting. I wonder what's happened with their wartime weaving machines. :blink:

Regards, Wim:)

This picture shows the front gate of Landsberg Prison. No I didn't bang on the door & demand to see Hitler's prison cell, nor did I ask them what happened to the dedication plaque.

Where it all started on 9th of November 1923. This is where Hitler, SA Regiment Munich, Strosstruppe Hitler &all the other ad hoc units formed up to start out on their march to destiny. As most members probably know, the Burgerbraukeller has since been demolished & no longer exists.

I wouldn't doubt one bit that the BeVo firm would still have their wartime patterns and maybe even the original art drawings...

Many of these photos are now historical in their own right. Great to see them.

Thanks!

Cheers, Ade.

That is a very interesting question. I was under the impression that neither the company nor the building is existent today. But obviously they were still in business by 1970.

Great photos!

This is indeed a serious question. Wherever those machienes and patterns are -I heard rumours from very advanced collectors they were sold to eastern companies- it's a very scary thing. Every business man in the embroidery work can start up a range of perfect fakes with these things in hands. :blink:

it was either in the late 1970s or mid 80s that a auction company 'Manions' were auctioning off 100s of BeVo foreign volunteer shields.
The auction ran a few months. Many of the rarest of shields were sold and all looked to be good.

The tale was that all came from the BeVo factory storage building and Manions was the outlet to buy them thru their auction house...True or false I don't know but they did have a few 100 for sale over a few auctions,,,and they were good!
