This forum is for requesting help in translating documents or deciphering abbreviations and acronyms.

Please consider using a web-based language translator before asking for help. Thanks.

Here you have a useful table of old german writing, "Sütterlin".
I saved it to my HD when Ade post it on another forum.
Hope it helps...

Thanks Santi, that is a great help.

There are many different wartime German scripts. Does anyone have other such helpful guides?

There are more then one form of Suetterlin.
So there is:
1) the Suetterlin-form from the 19./20.Century (current about 1900);
2) Schreibschrift from Ludwig Suetterlin from 1911;
3) Offenbacher Schrift from Rudolf Koch from 1927;
4) Richtform der Verkehrsschrift from 1934;
5) Deutsche Schreibschrift from Koch-Hermersdorf-Schrift from Bavaria, used 1950-1955 (the script as there used at schools).

They look largely the same, but some are very easy to read by those that have some knowledge of Suetterlin.
It is very well possible there do exist other forms as well!

the shown one by Santi is the 1934 form.
I have no samples to show, as they are in my head, but most I can read when printed. Not always when it is handwritten. As often then it is sometimes totally impossible to read it, especially when one is having a lousy handwriting!

I am not intending to do all Suetterlin translations that are shown with the forum, but when I have it in mind I will do. Possibly someone else (Germans from the forum) may have them available and will post them.

Wilhelm, thanks for your kind offer. I sometimes ask a German colleague of mine for translation help. When he is stumped he asks his father (a WWII-veteran) for help. Even he can be stymied by poor handwriting. Cheers, Marc
