Historical revisionism is the critical reexamination of historical facts for the purpose of rewriting histories with newly discovered information or a reinterpretation of existing information. Revisionism has both positive and negative conations. Two relatively recent examples of revisionism of military history are:
The Blitzkrieg Myth: How Hitler and the Allies Misread the Strategic Realities of World War II by John Mosier (Harper Perennial: November 2004)
The Blitzkrieg Legend: The 1940 Campaign in the West by Karl-Heinz Frieser (US Naval Institute Press: October 2005)
Both works have their supporters and detractors. We are also seeing emerging revisionism of our understanding of the Eastern Front. With increased access to former-Soviet archives we can expect the trend to continue.
What do you think? What revisionism have you seen; and is it valid? Is your own research changing your opinion of “conventional views” of the World Wars? Please post your thoughts.
